Alison Sweet is a photography based Intermedia Artist
who is passionate about photographic history, landscape and the history of the American West.
who is passionate about photographic history, landscape and the history of the American West.
Alison strongly believes in the importance of knowing and understanding history.
She follows the New Western History which recognizes the romantic myths of the American West and acknowledges that America colonized it’s Frontier. The West was not “free unoccupied land.”
History deleted many groups of people including women, despite the significant role that they played.
By using the work of women historians, writers, photographers and western women’s stories, Alison creates artwork that looks at the myths of the west along with how and why women, and their work, were deleted from the narrative.
We are all continually affected by the these inaccurate histories and mythologies.
Alison is an artist that is contributing to the growing movement of correcting gender exclusions in all fields.
